Eliot, you are correct that simple argument could be made but there are far more contributions to the problem that go far beyond lifestyle choices. Case in point:

In Tulsa, the life expectancy for a patient that lives North of I-244 is 14 years less than the rest of the city. Is it that everyone who lives North of the Interstate makes unhealthy choices? No. The issue is access. For every 1 physician up North, there are 40 in the South portion of the city, there are ZERO hospitals and nearly 90% of the area does not have access to fresh fruits, vegetables or even a grocer within 3 miles.

In terms of regulating healthcare, my point is if you are going to spend $1 Trillion dollars on something and tell me its to save American lives, you could save many millions of lives more just by shifting the focus to what is truly costing American lives.

Our healthcare expenditures are double (per person) what any other country in the world spends yet we still have a lower life expectancy and higher infant mortality than ALL other industrialized nations. As I said before...let that sink in.

A simple argument could be made that all of those conditions are preventable in the first place by the patient (in the large majority of cases) choosing to live a healthy lifestyle. Those who do not, which are those probably swayed by constant and consistent advertising to eat horrible things and misuse products based on what ever excuse used, become the patient themself in the debate. We do not expect the Government to regulate our diet, so then why should we expect them to regulate our healthcare? Hence, we sin tax alcohol and cigarettes considerably, yet we remain in peril...allowing the convince our society allows us with "fast food" further achieve a higher mortality rate for the patients that are well, non compliant with therapy fix original problem and thus exacerbate the situation to multiple situation problem. Here, Docs practice medicine to fix those neglects of the patient inspite of ever increasing malpractice insurance fees which have a tendency of negating why they even practice in the first place. The problem, as much as we hate to admit, is the patient giving in to a shit lifestyle promoted by the country we live in...not the insurance, not the attending physician. We're just fucking under-educated zombies buying into everything and following our bellies.
