Preganglionic neurons are located in the intermediolateral nucleus in the T11 – L2 spinal segments. In the primary sympathetic innervation of the bladder, preganlionic neurons course in the hypogastric nerve to the pelvic plexus, where they synaptically contact postganglionic neurons that project to the bladder. In addition, the preganglionic neurons form synaptic contacts on the presynaptic terminals of the parasympathetic preganglionic neurons.
